Before hiring a home contractor, it’s important to do your research. Checking a contractor’s credentials, references, reviews, and registration status can help you avoid scams, poor workmanship, and unexpected costs. Taking the time to verify a contractor’s experience and reputation gives you greater confidence that your project will be completed safely, professionally, and according to your expectations. A little research upfront can save significant time, money, and stress later.

While the law requires contractors to register with the Attorney General’s office, this registration is not an endorsement of their honesty or quality of work. For this reason, in addition to seeing whether a contractor is registered with the Attorney General’s office, you should also:

  • Thoroughly check your contractor’s references.
  • Obtain more than one bid for the job.
  • Check for complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau.
