HARRISBURG — Attorney General Dave Sunday announced that a recent joint investigation by the Philadelphia Gun Violence Task Force and the Philadelphia Police Department is a stark reminder to lock up your vehicle — especially when firearms and other valuables are inside.
The Office of Attorney General-led Philadelphia Gun Violence Task Force, along with the Philadelphia Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police, investigated the theft of two firearms from a vehicle parked last month at Rivers Casino on North Delaware Avenue.
Surveillance video and other information revealed that Darnell Martin, 33, and Eric Blackwell, 29, were involved in the theft, with Martin entering the unlocked car and taking items (including the firearms) while Blackwell served as lookout.
Investigators determined Martin had frequented casinos regularly to check for unlocked vehicles in parking lots. Martin is suspected of committing approximately 20 thefts from vehicles, at area casinos. Stolen personal checks, credit/debit cards, clothing, and other items were seized from Martin. The firearms are unaccounted for.
“This case comes down to common sense — there really is no good reason to leave your vehicle unlocked,” Attorney General Dave Sunday said. “Gun owners, particularly, should be vigilant and know that weapons are valuable to thieves. Stolen firearms present a direct threat to the public, as those guns often end up at the scene of violent crimes or in the hands of someone prohibited from legal possession.”
Martin and Blackwell were recently charged by Philadelphia police with felony counts of theft and illegal possession of firearms, and related offenses.
The cases will be prosecuted by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Criminal charges, and any discussion thereof, are merely allegations and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
