Clearfield County Man Arrested For Child Abuse, Aggravated Assault Of 4-Month-Old Daughter

October 19, 2020 | Topic: Criminal

HARRISBURG—Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced today that a DuBois man has been arrested for inflicting life-threatening injuries on his 4-month-old infant daughter.

“Physically harming an infant child is abhorrent,” said Attorney General Shapiro. “There are consequences for harming children in Pennsylvania and the defendant is facing those consequences today. My Office is focused on fighting for the defenseless, and will continue to hold child abusers accountable.”

On January 31, 2018, Dean Sulin’s daughter was taken to Penn Highlands hospital and subsequently flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh after suffering life-threatening injuries, including a bilateral subdural hematoma, retinal hemorrhages, and extensive bruising. The case was finally referred to the Office of Attorney General in August 2020.

The physicians who examined the child determined that her injuries were the result of abusive head trauma. Investigators believe that these injuries were inflicted by Sulin, who was her primary caregiver that day. During further examination, the attending physicians posited the child had a combination of new and older injuries.

Familial witnesses told investigators that on different occasions they saw Sulin pick up his infant daughter and shake her violently while screaming expletives.

Sulin has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault. Senior Deputy Attorney General Patrick Schulte and Deputy Attorney Philip McCarthy are prosecuting the case. All charges discussed are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
