HARRISBURG — Attorney General Dave Sunday announced significant progress in removing fentanyl and illegal firearms from Pennsylvania communities during 2025, his first year in office as the Commonwealth’s top law enforcement official.

Attorney General Sunday’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation reported a record number of fentanyl seizures last year, with OAG agents and collaborators seizing nearly 57 million doses of the lethal drug. That does not include nearly 100,000 fentanyl pills that also were seized.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl is 2 milligrams.

In all, the estimated street value of Office of Attorney General fentanyl seizures last year is over $58 million.

“Fentanyl continues to kill Pennsylvanians, erasing victims’ hopes and dreams, and leaving loved ones with a heartache that never heals. That is why targeting traffickers will remain a top priority,” Attorney General Sunday said. “This record number of seizures by our team, along with collaborators, is an indicator of great progress — but also a sign of the tremendous demand, and profits, available to predatory dealers.”

Nearly 30 million fentanyl doses were seized in the greater Philadelphia area. Nearly 20 million fentanyl doses were seized in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

The Office of Attorney General’s Gun Violence Task Forces seized last year 539 firearms that were illegally possessed across Pennsylvania. The firearms were either illegally trafficked, had no serial numbers, and/or were possessed by individuals with prior felony convictions or were otherwise prohibited from having firearms.

Many of the firearms had modifications, such as illegal machine gun conversion switches.

The Gun Violence Task Forces are Attorney General-led collaborations of local, state, and federal law enforcement partners committed to tracking the illegal movement and possession of firearms and acts of gun violence.

“These firearms so often ended up at the scenes of violent crimes as a shooter’s weapon of choice, so every single seizure is impactful in achieving public safety goals,” Attorney General Sunday said. “If Pennsylvanians cannot walk their children to school, or visit the neighborhood grocer or pharmacy without the threat of gun violence, that means we still have work to do. I thank our partners for sharing the commitment to targeting illegal firearms and those who traffic and use them to commit crimes.”
