CASE UPDATE: Johnstown Pediatrician Waives Hearing on Latest Sexual Abuse Charges

April 20, 2018 | Topic: Criminal

HARRISBURG — Following the January arrest of a Johnstown pediatrician for indecent assault of a patient and additional charges in March for the indecent assault of a 14-year-old family relative, Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced the pediatrician waived his right to a preliminary hearing on new charges for sexually abusing another family relative – a 7-year-old girl.

Dr. Johnnie Barto, 70, of Delta Drive, Johnstown, was charged in the latest case with indecent assault, corruption of minors, unlawful contact with a minor and endangering the welfare of children after another young relative of Barto came forward and detailed her repeated sexual assault by him over several years. The assaults in the latest case began when the victim was three years old.

“There are few people whom parents trust more with their own children than their pediatrician and their own family – Barto took advantage of that and betrayed their trust,” Attorney General Josh Shapiro said. “He preyed on young children for his own sexual gratification, and these serious charges reflect the horrendous nature of his crimes.”

Barto was previously held for trial on charges related to the other two assaults. He is currently incarcerated on $500,000 bond. The case is being prosecuted by Senior Deputy Attorney General Simquita Bridges.

Anyone with information related to the investigation of Barto should contact the Office of Attorney’s special hotline for the Barto case at 412-565-7680 or Richland Township Police at 814-266-8333.
