CASE UPDATE: Former Northumberland County Probation Chief Sentenced for Theft of Funds

February 25, 2020 | Topic: Criminal

HARRISBURG – The former head of Northumberland County’s adult probation office today was sentenced to between 3 and 23 months in prison and ordered to repay more than $56,000 in restitution, Attorney General Josh Shapiro said.

Jimmie Cortelyou, 41, pleaded guilty in October to theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, a felony of the third degree, after he stole house arrest funds from Northumberland County Probation and Parole.

“Cortelyou changed the way Northumberland County counted and deposited house arrest funds in the attempt to pad his personal funds,” General Shapiro said. “Public corruption like this has no place in Pennsylvania, and we work hard every day to stop it.”

From June 2014 until February 2016, Cortelyou logged $152,009 into the Probation and Parole Office’s receipt book, but only $120,478 made it into its Treasury account.

Cortelyou has repaid the $31,530 difference and he paid the $25,000 it cost the county to conduct a forensic audit of the defrauded account prior to sentencing. In addition to his prison sentence and restitution, Cortelyou will serve two consecutive years of probation.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Nicole Forzato prosecuted this case.
