HARRISBURG – Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul today spearheaded a coalition of 18 Attorneys General in opposing a proposal by the U.S. Department of Labor to change the method employers use to calculate overtime, which would slash wages and eliminate jobs.
HARRISBURG — Attorney General Josh Shapiro today led a coalition of 17 attorneys general in opposing a new Department of Labor rule undermining Civil Rights Era protections that prevent federal contractors from discriminating against employees. Under the proposed rule, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) would expand existing exemptions to allow any federal contractor who claims to have a religious purpose to discriminate against current or prospective employees based on the religious or moral objections of the contractor. In a comment letter, the Attorneys General urge DOL to rescind the proposal and note, among other criticisms, that it is in direct conflict with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
HARRISBURG — Attorney General Josh Shapiro led a coalition of 21 Attorneys General today to formally oppose U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ plan to eliminate the Gainful Employment Rule, which requires schools to provide information about their programs’ costs, debt load, success rate, expected earnings and other critical information so students and families can make informed choices.

It is estimated that under the proposed rule, more than 8 million workers will lose overtime protections compared to the previous rule.

Many of those schools were predatory, for-profit colleges.

HARRISBURG — Attorney General Josh Shapiro today, with a coalition of 15 attorneys general, called on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler to initiate rulemaking in order to issue a new “asbestos reporting rule” which would eliminate exemptions for asbestos in the current Chemical Data Reporting rule. Asbestos is a highly hazardous chemical currently in widespread use throughout the U.S. The coalition argues that without requiring adequate reporting, the EPA will be unable to comply with its mandate under the Toxic Substances Control Act (known as TSCA) to prevent unreasonable risks to health and the environment presented by asbestos.
