HARRISBURG — Attorney General Dave Sunday announced that a Luzerne County man has been sentenced to 14 to 30 years in prison for shooting his then-girlfriend in 2018.

Roberto Alvarez-Marquez, 38, of Hazleton, previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and illegal possession of a firearm. He was sentenced Thursday.

“Domestic violence of any nature cannot and will not be tolerated, particularly an act as horrific as this one,” Attorney General Sunday said. “The victim is alive today, but not for lack of effort by her attacker. We hope this conviction and sentence offer her a measure of justice as she continues on with her life.”

According to the investigation, Alvarez-Marquez was upset at his girlfriend for going out with friends. When she came home, he shot her at close range in the chest.

The victim survived with significant internal injuries and continues to recover.

This case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Thomas Ost-Prisco.
