HARRISBURG — Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced that a Schuylkill County man was sentenced to 24 ½ to 49 years in prison for the murder of his father.

Michael Marchalk, 38, of Pear Street, Barnesville, PA, was originally apprehended on June 23, 2017 after stealing the victim’s truck and wallet and fleeing following striking the victim multiple times with a baseball bat causing his death. In December 2018, Marchalk was found guilty by a jury of third-degree murder, theft and other related charges.

This case was referred to the Office of Attorney General by former Schuylkill County District Attorney Christine Holman.

“Our prosecutors worked closely with law enforcement to locate and arrest a dangerous killer who fled to another state to avoid prosecution for murder. We are pleased with today’s sentence for this violent offender who attacked his own father,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “Thanks to strong collaboration with our partners in the Pennsylvania State Police, we were able to bring this man to justice.”

Marchalk was sentenced by Judge William Baldwin in the Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas. This case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Rebecca Elo and Senior Deputy Attorney General Christopher Phillips.
