HARRISBURG—Attorney General Shapiro filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court defending the Affordable Care Act from Republican attacks to end the Obama health care law. The Trump Administration and a group of states led by Texas are continuing a legal push started by Republicans to repeal the entire ACA without a replacement during the current health crisis. In 2018, a District Court Judge in Texas attempted to strike down the entire law, and now the case is before the Supreme Court.
HARRISBURG― Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced that the 45th Statewide Investigating Grand Jury voted to charge Bassam El-Borno, M.D., a Lancaster County psychiatrist with felony violations of the Drug Act for prescribing outside the good faith practice of medicine, Medicaid fraud, theft by deception, insurance fraud, and a violation of the Wiretap Act. The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General worked in partnership with the U.S. Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, on this case.

HARRISBURG—Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced the arrests of five individuals in Allegheny County linked to gun trafficking and related firearm offenses. The Office of Attorney General, with the assistance of local law enforcement, arrested Terri Wilson, Jalaan Williams, Craig Joyner, and Devante Ferguson for their roles in the illegal straw purchases of firearms. Audra Voye was also arrested today for firearms related offenses. The unrelated arrests of Wilson, Williams, and Voye followed referrals from the Pittsburgh Police Department. The investigation into Joyner and Ferguson was initiated at the Monroeville Gun Show where the Office of Attorney General’s Gun violence Section worked in cooperation with the Monroeville Police Department.
HARRISBURG, PA – Attorney General Shapiro announced today that he’s leading a multistate lawsuit against Mariner Finance for widespread violations of multiple consumer protection laws. The suit alleges that Mariner Finance charged consumers for hidden add-on products that consumers either didn’t know about or didn’t agree to buy. Consumers left Mariner Finance believing they had entered into an agreement to borrow and repay, over time, a certain amount of money. In reality, because of these hidden add-on products, Mariner added hundreds to thousands of dollars to the total amount a consumer owed. Mariner charged Pennsylvanians $19.5 million for add-ons from 2015 to 2018 and charged another $8 million in interest for these premiums in the same period.
HARRISBURG – Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced today that a medical assistant has been arrested for charges related to stealing patient information for personal use. The defendant, Ashley Latimer, 34, of Philadelphia, used information she collected from patient records and licenses to open credit cards, purchase items, and lease apartments.
HARRISBURG —Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced criminal charges against 30 individuals and 21 businesses for “title washing” and for re-titling stolen vehicles in Lebanon, Lehigh, and Philadelphia counties. The title washing fraud was designed to bypass rigid requirements for reconstructed titles in states such as New Jersey and New York. The re-titling of these stolen vehicles was intended to make those vehicles look legitimate for resale or export.

HARRISBURG – Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced a settlement concerning a fraudulent telefunding operation that bombarded 67 million consumers nationwide, with 1.3 billion deceptive charitable fundraising calls since 2008. Associated Community Services (ACS) placed 61,526,158 calls to phone numbers in Pennsylvania from Jan. 1, 2016 through Aug. 31, 2019. In some instances, 47,562 Pennsylvania phone numbers were called more than 10 times in a week, 81,200 were called more than three times a day, 271,417 were called two times an hour, and 4,515 were called more than three times an hour.
