Tom Corbett - Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General - Protecting Pennsylvanians

Intern and Volunteer Profile

The Office of Attorney General is pleased to provide an intern and volunteer program which offers a variety of opportunities for students to gain valuable work experience. These internships enhance the legal skills of law students and further the education of all students. Volunteers assist with the mediation of consumer complaints in the Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The Office participates in various co-op, extern/intern, public service, and legal clinic programs that may be offered to students through high schools, colleges, universities, and law schools. We also participate in the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) Community Service Off-Campus Program by utilizing eligible students as interns.

Candidates for all intern and volunteer positions must have a satisfactory criminal records check. Additionally, candidates for intern positions in the Criminal Law Division must also have a satisfactory background investigation.

Legal Internship (Paid)
Students who have completed at least one year of law school are eligible to apply for a Legal Intern position with an hourly rate of pay by completing an Office of Attorney General Application for Employment and returning it along with a copy of their law school transcript. Students must be currently enrolled in law school in order to be considered for an internship. Law school graduates are not eligible to participate in the Legal Intern program.

The Legal Intern program consists of three hiring periods per year:

  • Winter: January 16 to May 31
  • Summer: June 1 to August 31
  • Fall: September 1 to January 15

Legal Internship (Nonpaid)
Students who have completed at least one year of law school may be eligible to participate in an internship and receive credit through their law school. In order to be considered for this type of internship, a student needs to complete an Application for Employment and return it along with a letter from the director or chairman of the internship program which certifies that credits will be earned for serving an internship. Upon receipt, this information will be forwarded to the appropriate areas for review and consideration.

All students interested in being considered for paid and nonpaid Legal Intern positions should refer to the Divisional information listed below in order to complete the Supplemental Application for Attorney and Legal Intern Positions.

Volunteer Opportunities
The Bureau of Consumer Protection utilizes students and senior citizens on a volunteer basis to assist with the mediation of consumer complaints. Formal training is given prior to engaging in the mediation process. Instruction is ongoing in order to educate the volunteers in various substantive legal areas. Bureau of Consumer Protection Offices which use volunteers are located in Allentown, Ebensburg, Erie, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton and State College.

Nonlegal Internship (Paid)
Applications are accepted from high school/college students interested in serving an internship with an hourly rate of pay. However, these positions are not available on a regular basis because of the nature of the work of this Office.

Nonlegal Internship (Nonpaid)
College students interested in being considered for a non-paid internship who would receive credits from their school or university must submit a completed Application for Employment along with a letter from the director or chairman of the internship program which certifies that credits will be earned for serving an internship. Upon receipt, this information will be forwarded to the appropriate areas for review and consideration. If a student is interested in serving an internship with this Office, sufficient time must be allowed for processing of the request.
