For the past ten years, the Office of Attorney General has published the Attorney General's Drug-Free Calendar featuring artwork created by Pennsylvania's fifth-grade students. In conjunction with National Drug Prevention Month, the office is sponsoring the Eleventh Annual Attorney General Drug-Free Calendar Contest. Fifth-graders from across the commonwealth will have a chance to have their artwork displayed on a 2008 drug-free calendar.

To have your school participate, please pass along this information to your fifth-grade teachers asking them to have their students create an original illustration that includes a drug-free message of their choice (example: "Play it Safe, Be Drug Free"). Students may use paints, pens, pencils, crayons or any other drawing instrument.  Glitter and the use of copyrighted brand names or images are prohibited. The drawings should be on white 8 ½ x 11 inch paper with a landscape (sideways/horizontal) orientation.

The contest itself works in two stages:

Individual School Competition
In preparation for Red Ribbon Week, the students' drawings should be displayed somewhere within their school between October 15 and 19.  The following week, Red Ribbon Week, the fifth-grade teacher(s) will be responsible for having the artwork judged by an impartial person or group of people.

Statewide Competition
Each elementary school would then submit their top two (2) vote getters for the competition with schools from across the state.

Please ensure that the names of the student, teacher, school, school district and county as well as the school address and telephone number are clearly identified on the back of the two winning entries.  All entries must be returned postmarked by October 26, 2007. Entries received after that date will not be considered eligible for the contest.

After a judging period, the office will:

  • Choose one (1) grand prize winner whose artwork will have the honor of gracing the calendar's cover and award him or her with a $500 U.S. Savings Bond.
  • Choose twelve (12) winners who will each have his or her drawing featured as one month of the calendar in addition to receiving a $200 U.S. Savings Bond.

All winners will be notified of their accomplishment the week ending November 2, 2007. The calendar winners will be invited to Harrisburg one day in mid December for a luncheon. At that time, the award winners will be presented with their U.S. Savings Bonds. A photographer will be on hand to take photos for distribution to the winners' hometown newspapers. Winning entries will be posted on the website.
