Be An Informed Health Care Consumer

There is a lot you can do to look out for your own best interests. Before you enroll with a health plan, ask questions. Make certain that promises made by the HMO or health insurer are in writing. Do your homework!

Health Alliance of Pennsylvania (HAP)  - A statewide advocacy organization for the hospitals and health systems in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Medical Society (PMS)  - A statewide advocacy organization for Pennsylvania physicians.

University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center?s Oncolink  - One of the best sites on the Internet for cancer information.

American Academy of Family Physicians/Patient Information (AAFP)  - Information on the body, diseases, treatments and healthy living.

American Medical Association  - Offers links to Health Insight, where you can find easy-to understand health information, along with links to other medical sites.

Cancer Net  - Offers cancer information from the National Cancer Institute.

Consumer World  - A public service site with more than 1700 categorized consumer resources on the net.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  - Tips about buying prescriptions on-line.

Health On The Net  - A non profit organization whose purpose is to advance development and application of new information technology, notably in the fields of medicine and health.

HealthFinder  - A U.S. Government web site whose goal it is to information available that will help consumers make better health choices for themselves and their families.

InteliHealth  - Health Resources and information, including mental health resources, sponsored by Johns Hopkins University.

KidsHealth  - Site offers up-to-date information about growth, food and fitness, childhood infections, immunizations, lab tests, medical and surgical conditions, as well as the latest treatments.

U.S. Consumer Gateway  - Offers links to Federal consumer information sites run by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Transportation Department, Security & Exchange Commission (SEC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other agencies.
